Nearly 94% of the smartphones shipped worldwide in 2013 were either running on Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS operating systems, says a report from research firm IDC.
Of the two, Android commanded an overwhelming 78.6% market share for smartphone shipments, based on operating system. Apple represented 15.2%.
Last year was the first time global smartphone shipments topped the 1 billion mark.
“Clearly, there was strong end-user demand for both Android and iOS products during the (fourth) quarter and the year,” says IDC research manager Ramon Llamas.
During the fourth quarter, Android and iOS accounted for nearly 96% of all global smartphone shipments.
